NATURE, PARKS AND GARDENS
Scarborough is a fantastic base for nature lovers, sandwiched as it is between coast and country. Walk along the beach, and you can spot wildfowl, waders and other seabirds; seals, porpoises, and, if you’re really lucky, the occasional whale or even basking shark.
Head north, and within ten minutes you’re in the North York Moors National Park, with game birds, curlew and deer; south for the Wolds, and the world famous Bempton Cliffs, bustling with puffins. Just inland, you can find the gorgeous Forge Valley, with its ancient woodland and trout stream.
If you prefer your great outdoors a little less wild, Scarborough’s many parks and gardens are one of its great glories, including the oriental themed Peasholm Park with its Willow-pattern-themed island, where you can walk, boat, listen to music from the lake centre bandstand, or enjoy the unique and eccentric experience of the Naval Warfare – a miniature recreation of the Battle of the River Plate, featuring the smallest man-powered navy in the world!
